How To Be The Perfect Pet Sitter

Your friend has been dropping hints about their upcoming Mexican Riviera vacation and it’s not because the friend wants you go with them. They want you to pet sit. If you’ve been asked to be a pet sitter, the least you can do is take it seriously and do a great job. The following tips can help you out.

Step 1: Clear your calendar. If you’ve promised to take on the responsibility of caring for your friend’s pet, make sure you’ve cleared the dates on your calendar. Your friend wouldn’t have asked you if she didn’t think you were reliable so now is the time to earn that reputation. Bottom line: Don’t flake once you’ve committed!

Step 2: Confirmation. A few days before you’re set to pet sit, call your friend and confirm your duties. Make sure you know exactly what days and time you’re expected to be available.

Step 3: Communication. Make sure you have several ways of getting in touch with your friend while she’s away. Make sure you have the phone number and address to her veterinarian and that you have the right to make medical decisions about her pet if you’re unable to reach the owner.

Step 4: Clarification. Have the pet owner write down the specific needs of the pet so there is no confusion about what’s expected of you. If the pet is coming to your home for the weekend, the owner should plan to bring all of the items that the pet needs to be comfortable (dog bed, familiar toys, etc.).

Step 5: Consideration. If you’re pet setting at the pet owner’s home, make sure you keep it clean. Just because you’re watching her pet doesn’t mean you can throw a party and leave dirty dishes lying around for your friend’s return. You’d expect the same treatment if someone were in your home.

Step 6: Caring. This is the most important step to being a good pet sitter and a good friend. Feed, water and play with the pet as if it were your own. The pet probably needs extra care and attention because it will be missing its owner!

Step 7: Check back. If you’re dropping the pet at your friend’s home, have a system in place for knowing when your friend has returned home. Give your friend feedback on how the pet sitting went and ask for feedback in return.

The good news is, now that you’ve pet sit for your friend, she owes you one!
